How to key green screen footage in four steps

Why one tolerance slider is enough
Tolerance drives a single colour-distance threshold, and the tool derives edge softness, feathering and spill suppression from that same value automatically. That is a deliberate trade: one knob you can reason about, instead of four you have to balance.
The practical range is narrower than 0–100 suggests. Below about 20 you tend to keep a rim of background colour. Above roughly 65 you start punching holes in green-adjacent parts of your subject — foliage, green shirts, the reflections in glasses. If the background is still visible at 60 or 70, the problem is almost always lighting, not the threshold.

Alpha PNG vs. alpha WebM: which export?
For a photo or a single frame, choose PNG. A 32-bit PNG stores a full alpha channel losslessly, which is what you want for thumbnails, overlays, product cutouts and slides. The format is standardised in the W3C PNG Specification, so it opens anywhere.
For motion, alpha WebM is the compact option. VP9 and VP8 can carry a real alpha channel, documented by the WebM Project, and editors such as DaVinci Resolve and Premiere Pro can read it. Not every player renders alpha, though — some show the transparent area as black or white, which is a playback limitation rather than a bad export.
If your browser cannot encode alpha video, the tool falls back to a ZIP of transparent PNG frames. Be realistic about size: ten seconds at 30 fps is 300 full-resolution PNGs, so expect a large download and plan to import it as an image sequence, not drag it onto a timeline one frame at a time.
How it compares to desktop and online keyers

Where chroma keying still fails
Keying is only as good as the footage. Even, shadow-free lighting on the screen matters more than any slider: a single hot spot or a crease in the fabric leaves a patch that survives every tolerance setting.
Semi-transparent subjects are the second hard case. Smoke, steam, glass and thin fabric contain background and subject simultaneously, and a single threshold has to guess. Motion blur does the same thing — the blurred edge is a blend of green and skin, so it either survives as a fringe or gets cut away with part of the subject.
Practical fixes belong on set: light the screen separately from the subject, keep roughly 1–1.5 metres of separation to reduce spill, use matte non-reflective fabric rather than a painted wall, and avoid green clothing.
