Timezone Converter: Practical Tips and Common Mistakes

Reviewed by the OnlineFree.app team · Updated

Key points

  • Timezone Converter converts one wall-clock time into up to eight IANA time zones on a single screen.
  • The UTC reference line and ISO 8601 string are the most portable outputs for schedules and configs.
  • A Previous day or Next day badge means the target calendar date differs from the source date.
  • IANA IDs like America/New_York are safer than ambiguous abbreviations like CST.
  • Use Timezone Converter as a first check and verify payroll, legal, or travel times against authoritative sources.

One input, up to eight local times

Timezone Converter converts one date and wall-clock time into local times for up to eight target time zones at once, showing each zone’s time, date, offset difference, and day-change badge. It is built for the repeated question behind remote work and scheduling: if it is 09:00 in Seoul, what time is that in New York, London, and UTC?

You enter a date and time, pick the source IANA zone, and add target cities or zones as chips. The source row stays pinned at the top as a reference, and every other row is ordered the way you selected it. The Now button fills the current minute so you can check a meeting time without typing.

The input is interpreted as wall time in the From timezone, not as UTC. On first load, Timezone Converter detects your browser zone through Intl.DateTimeFormat().resolvedOptions().timeZone and falls back to UTC if detection fails. The default targets are UTC, America/New_York, Europe/London, Asia/Seoul, Asia/Tokyo, and Asia/Shanghai; you can remove any chip and search for another. All of this runs in the browser, with no account and no stored history—open the Timezone Converter page and try it.

How do you convert a time across time zones?

Enter the wall-clock time in the source zone, choose the source IANA zone, then read each target row; the UTC reference line is the anchor that keeps the conversion honest. For example, 2026-01-15 09:00 in America/New_York is 14:00 UTC. That makes Europe/London 14:00, Asia/Seoul 23:00, and Asia/Tokyo 23:00, with +5h, +14h, and +14h badges relative to New York.

The UTC line also gives you an ISO 8601 string such as 2026-01-15T14:00:00Z. Copy that string rather than a city abbreviation when the value will be pasted into a cron expression, API payload, or calendar tool. Abbreviations are risky: CST can mean China Standard Time or US Central Standard Time, while IANA IDs like Asia/Shanghai and America/Chicago are unambiguous. The IANA time zone database is the registry behind those IDs.

Results update as you type—there is no submit button. You can switch between 12- and 24-hour display, and the Copy result button exports a plain-text list for chat or tickets. If a row looks wrong, check the source zone first; most conversion errors come from entering a time that was already local to a different city.

Day-change badges catch what clocks hide

A “Previous day” or “Next day” badge means the target zone’s calendar date is not the same as the source date. Take 2026-01-15 09:00 in Asia/Seoul. That is 00:00 UTC on January 15, which is 19:00 on January 14 in America/New_York—so the New York row carries a Previous day badge. Ignore the badge and you can book a meeting for the wrong date.

The opposite happens when you move west-to-east late in the day. 2026-01-15 18:00 in America/Los_Angeles is 02:00 UTC on January 16, which is 11:00 on January 16 in Asia/Tokyo, so Tokyo shows Next day. The hour looks plausible; the date is the part that breaks deadlines and cron schedules.

These badges are calculated from the same Intl conversion as the time, not from a fixed offset table. That matters because offsets are not constant: New York is UTC−5 in January and UTC−4 in July, while Phoenix stays on UTC−7. If you only compare clock hours, you will miss both day changes and seasonal offset shifts.

Choose eight zones, not eighteen

When we built Timezone Converter, we capped target zones at eight; the source row sits above them, so you get a nine-row comparison at most. The cap is a design choice: past eight rows, the screen turns into a scrolling wall and people start skimming the wrong line. It also matches the practical reality of most distributed teams, where two or three regions matter and the rest are noise.

Avoid duplicate zones. UTC and Etc/UTC are the same offset; Europe/London and GB often resolve to the same rules. Pick canonical city IDs and remove aliases you do not need. The searchable dropdown in Timezone Converter accepts common aliases such as KST, EST, and JST so you can find a zone quickly, but confirm the IANA ID before you rely on it—abbreviations can be ambiguous across regions.

For recurring meetings, pick a stable set: the source zone, UTC, and one zone per team region. Revisit the set when daylight saving changes. A four-zone list that stays readable is more useful than an eight-zone list nobody trusts.

Copy the ISO 8601 string, not a screenshot

The UTC reference line is the most portable output in Timezone Converter because it can include an ISO 8601 string like 2026-01-15T14:00:00Z. Paste that string into cron jobs, log lines, API payloads, and calendar invites when you need one unambiguous value. A screenshot of city rows is readable to humans but useless to a scheduler.

The Copy result button exports a plain-text list of each zone, its local time, and its date; that is handy for chat threads and handoff notes. For machine-readable fields, prefer the ISO UTC value and let the receiving system convert it. If the receiving system stores local times without offsets, you have reintroduced the ambiguity the tool was meant to remove.

Treat the output as a strong first check, not a legal or payroll authority. Time-zone rules can change, and browser Intl data depends on the browser and operating system build. As of 2026, IANA time zone database releases still update offsets and DST rules; for contracts, billing cutoffs, or flight connections, verify against the authoritative source. Frequently asked questions

Does Timezone Converter account for daylight saving time?

Yes. Timezone Converter uses the browser’s Intl implementation and IANA time-zone IDs, so offsets follow the date you enter rather than a fixed table. A January New York time uses UTC−5, while a July time uses UTC−4. Always check the day-change badge and UTC line around DST transition days.

How many time zones can I compare at once in Timezone Converter?

Timezone Converter supports up to eight target time zones, plus a pinned source row. That gives you a maximum of nine rows in one view. The limit keeps the comparison readable and is enough for most distributed teams. Remove a chip to add a different city.

Is Timezone Converter free and private?

Yes. Timezone Converter runs entirely in your browser using Intl calculations, with no account, no server request, and no stored history. Your entered times are not sent to OnlineFree.app. The trade-off is that accuracy depends on your browser’s time-zone data, so verify critical values against an authoritative source.

What does the Copy result button output in Timezone Converter?

The Copy result button outputs a plain-text list of each selected zone with its local time and date. The UTC reference line separately provides an ISO 8601 string for configs and APIs. For machine-readable scheduling, copy the ISO UTC value; for chat updates, the plain-text list is easier to read.

Can Timezone Converter convert dates far in the future?

Timezone Converter can display future dates using the time-zone rules available in your browser. Those rules can change before the date arrives, especially for regions that revise daylight saving. Use future conversions as planning estimates, then recheck close to the event and verify against the IANA time zone database.
