What is Online Gantt Chart Maker?

Online Gantt Chart Maker is a free browser tool that turns a pasted list of tasks and dates into a rendered project timeline you can export as PNG, CSV or ICS. There is no account, no install and no server round-trip: the chart is drawn locally on an HTML canvas, so it re-renders on every keystroke instead of waiting for a button press.

We built it for people who need a presentable timeline in about two minutes — a freelancer sending a client a build schedule, a student mapping a thesis plan, a startup ops person sketching a launch week. The entire interface is a task textarea, an optional dependencies textarea and a three-way export switch.

How do you build a Gantt chart in two minutes?

The input is plain text, one task per line, in the order Task name, start date, end date. A line like `Design mockups, 2025-01-06, 2025-01-10` produces one labelled row with a bar covering those five calendar days. An optional fourth value is a progress percentage from 0 to 100, which shades a fill inside the bar.

The parser is deliberately forgiving. Blank lines are skipped, and commas, tabs or pipe characters all work as separators — useful when a task name itself contains a comma, in which case switch to tabs. Lines that do not resolve to a valid date pair are flagged rather than silently dropped, so a typo shows up immediately.

Dependencies go in the second box, one per line, written as `Design mockups -> Frontend build`. Arrows are drawn finish-to-start, meaning the dependent bar is shown to start after the prerequisite ends. Task names must match the list above exactly, including spacing and capitalisation, or the arrow simply will not appear.

Finally, pick PNG, CSV or ICS and download. The preview above the controls always reflects the current state, so there is nothing to refresh before exporting.

How it compares to Excel, MS Project and SaaS Gantt tools

The Excel route — type dates in columns, hand-fill coloured cells across a calendar grid, merge cells, resize everything — works until a date changes, at which point the whole picture has to be redrawn manually. It also has no real dependency arrows and no clean image export at presentation quality.

MS Project and hosted SaaS schedulers (Asana, Smartsheet, Monday) are genuinely more capable: baselines, resource levelling, critical path calculation, multi-user editing, notifications. They also require a licence or a seat-based account, and your schedule lives in someone else's cloud. For a one-off timeline that gets attached to an email, that overhead is hard to justify.

PNG, CSV or ICS: which export should you choose?

PNG is the default and the one most people want. The timeline is rendered at 2x device pixel ratio through `canvas.toBlob()`, so the file stays sharp when pasted into a slide deck or a client PDF. The exported image carries a title and a generated-on date footer, and the filename follows the pattern `gantt-chart-YYYY-MM-DD.png`.

CSV is the round-trip format. Its columns are Task, Start, End, Duration (days), Progress % and Depends On, and the file is written with a UTF-8 byte order mark so Excel opens accented task names correctly instead of mangling them. Use CSV when you want a backup of the schedule or need to hand the dates to someone working in a spreadsheet.

ICS turns each task into an all-day calendar event. Per RFC 5545, an all-day event's DTEND is exclusive, so a task ending 2025-01-10 is written with an end of 2025-01-11 to display correctly through the 10th — the iCalendar specification explains the rule. Import the file into Google Calendar, Apple Calendar or Outlook and every task appears on its own dates; progress fills and arrows do not carry across.

Date formats, weekends and other limits to know

The parser accepts ISO-style YYYY-MM-DD and US-style MM/DD/YYYY. That second option is the biggest trap for non-US users: `06/01/2025` is read as 1 June, not 6 January. Writing every date in the YYYY-MM-DD form defined by ISO 8601 removes the ambiguity entirely, and it also sorts correctly in the CSV export.

Bars span calendar days, not working days. A task from Friday to Monday occupies four columns including the weekend, and there is no holiday calendar or working-day mode. If weekend exclusion matters to your audience, note it in the title or trim the dates before pasting.

Nothing is persisted, by design. Refresh the tab and the chart is gone, so keep your paste block in a notes file or download the CSV before closing. Dependency arrows are finish-to-start only — no start-to-start, no lag, no lead — and mutually dependent tasks will not lay out sensibly, so sanity-check the arrows before you present.
