IP Address Lookup: Practical Tips and Common Mistakes

We built the IP Address Lookup tool so developers and sysadmins can quickly check where an IP lives and whether it is a real residential address or a datacenter proxy. In this article we share the practical tips we have gathered from real-world use and the mistakes that trip people up most often.

Start with your own IP before looking up someone else's

When you open the tool, leave the input box empty and click "Use my IP" — this returns your own public address along with its country, city, ASN and a proxy verdict. We find this is the fastest way to learn what every result field means because you already know roughly where you are and which internet provider you use. Comparing the tool's output against your actual location reveals how precise (or imprecise) IP geolocation can be.

It also surfaces the most common surprise: the country might match but the city can be off by a few hundred kilometres. That gap is normal for free geolocation databases and is exactly why we display an honest verdict chip rather than a false-precision map. Once you understand your own result, looking up addresses from server logs or email headers becomes much less ambiguous.

Watch for private and reserved IP ranges

One of the most frequent mistakes we see is entering an address like 192.168.1.1 or 10.0.0.5 and expecting a country and city in return. These are private ranges defined in RFC 1918 and they are not routable on the public internet. Our tool accepts them without error, but it returns an explanatory card labelled "Not routable" instead of geographic data.

Link-local addresses (169.254.x.x) and CGNAT blocks behave the same way. If you are investigating traffic from a log file and keep seeing private ranges, the issue is usually on your own network — a router, a firewall or a misconfigured proxy — not a remote visitor. Before you dig deeper into an IP's origin, confirm it is a public address. You can check for reserved ranges using the IANA IPv4 registry.

Read the proxy verdict as a hint, not proof

The tool returns one of four verdicts: Likely residential, Datacenter / hosting, Likely VPN or proxy, and Not routable. Each comes with two or three plain-language reasons drawn from the ASN type, the organisation name and whether the IP is announced by a known cloud provider. We deliberately keep the wording cautious because no heuristic is perfect.

A "Datacenter / hosting" result does not prove malicious intent — many legitimate services run on AWS, Google Cloud or Azure ranges. Similarly, a VPN verdict means the traffic passed through a known VPN endpoint; it does not tell you who is behind it. We always include an explicit "this is a heuristic, not proof" line for that reason. Treat the verdict as one signal among many when making security or moderation decisions.

Don't confuse ASN details with physical location

The lookup returns both an ASN number and its organisation name alongside the geographic fields. These can point in different directions. An ASN registered to a major carrier in the Netherlands might serve customers across Europe, Asia and North America. The country and city shown are derived from the IP's registration record, not from real-time tracking.

This is why we present ASN and geography as separate grid cells rather than merging them into one story. When you see an IP located in a country where your actual user clearly is not, check whether the ASN organisation is a large transit provider before raising an alert. Cross-referencing the ASN with the geographic data is a step we recommend every time, especially for fraud analysis.

Avoid these common input mistakes

The tool accepts IPv4 and IPv6 literals but rejects hostnames with a friendly nudge. Typing "google.com" instead of an IP like 8.8.8.8 is the most common error we encounter. Make sure you extract the raw address from your log or email header before pasting. Watch for trailing whitespace or copy-paste artifacts from formatted documents — the field uses a mono-font input to make these easier to spot.

IPv6 addresses are long and easy to miscount. Use the placeholder examples (2001:4860:4860::8888) as a sanity check that you have the right number of groups. If you are looking up multiple addresses, our tool is designed for one-off lookups on a single-screen layout. For batch processing, consider combining it with a command-line utility, but always verify a few results manually to make sure the automated workflow is picking up the right fields.
