Solve linear equations
Type an equation and get the answer with clean, notebook-ready working. One variable or a pair of simultaneous equations — all calculated privately in your browser.
Your equation
One unknown, on one or both sides of the equals sign.
How it works
No account, no upload and no waiting.
Type the equation
Use normal algebra notation. Implicit multiplication such as 3x and brackets are both accepted.
Get the answer
The solver isolates x, or solves the 2 × 2 system, and shows the result in large monospace type.
Check the working
Every line is written out, followed by a substitution check so you can copy it into your notebook.
Built for real homework
Linear equations stay linear — the solver rejects higher powers and variable products rather than guessing.
Variables on both sides
5(x − 2) = 3x + 4
Collect x terms, move constants and divide by the coefficient.
Simultaneous equations
2x + 3y = 8
x − y = 1
A determinant and Cramer's rule handle 2 × 2 systems cleanly.
Honest edge cases
0 = 3 · 0 = 0
No solution and infinitely many solutions are named and explained, not hidden.
FAQ
Does it show every step?
Yes, when “Show step-by-step working” is ticked. You will see the original equation, the operation used on each line, the final isolation, and a substitution check.
Can it solve brackets and fractions?
Brackets and division by a number are supported, including forms like 2(x + 3) = 10 or x ÷ 2 + 1 = 4. A variable in the denominator is rejected because that equation is not linear.
What happens with parallel equations?
A 2 × 2 system with a zero determinant is checked for consistency. It reports either “No solution” for distinct parallel lines or infinitely many solutions when both equations describe the same line.
Is my equation uploaded anywhere?
No. The parser and solver run entirely in your browser; there is no account and no server calculation.
