Lorem Ipsum Generator: Practical Tips and Common Mistakes

What does the Lorem Ipsum Generator produce?

It produces filler copy at an exact length you set — a number of paragraphs, sentences per paragraph, and words per sentence — and hands it back as plain text, paragraph-wrapped HTML, or Markdown with a single Copy button. There is no account and no page reload: the result panel re-renders live as you change the numbers.

The defaults are deliberately ordinary: 3 paragraphs, 4 sentences each, 12 words per sentence. That is 12 sentences and roughly 144 words, about a third of a printed page — usually enough to see whether a card grid, an article header, or a sidebar holds together. Sentence length varies by about ±3 words around your setting, so the block reads like prose rather than a metronome.

A stats bar under the result tracks words, characters, paragraphs, and estimated reading time. The character count is the one people forget to look at, and it is the only figure that matters when you are filling a field with a hard limit rather than a visual slot.

Size the filler to your real layout first

The most common mistake is generating first and measuring later. Before you open the Lorem Ipsum Generator, decide the shape of the slot: a hero paragraph, three equal teaser cards, and a list of eight headlines all need different counts, and guessing wastes a round trip through the clipboard.

In our own mockups a comfortable desktop measure runs about 10–14 words per line, so the 12-word default gives two or three lines per sentence — close to real article copy. Push to the 25-word ceiling and every line becomes a wall of text; drop to the 4-word floor and narrow columns fill with ragged stubs that hide overflow bugs instead of exposing them.

The hard ceiling is 20 paragraphs × 12 sentences × 25 words, up to roughly 6,000 words in one pass. For anything longer — a paginated archive, say — generate two blocks and join them. Below that, use the paragraph count as the layout unit and accept that nobody reads mock copy past the first screen.

Plain text, HTML, or Markdown?

Plain text separates paragraphs with blank lines and carries no markup: right for a spec doc, a text editor, or a chat message. HTML wraps each paragraph in its own `<p>…</p>` pair, ready for a CMS source view or a code sandbox. Markdown uses the same blank-line separation with no tags, which is what GitHub, most docs sites, and static-site generators expect.

Mismatches are easy to spot but still common. Pasting HTML into a rich-text field or a Markdown editor shows the tags as literal text. The reverse is worse: pasting plain text into a CMS that strips newlines collapses five paragraphs into one undifferentiated blob, which then gets blamed on the layout.

The result block is editable — fix a repeated word, cut the last sentence — but the Copy button always copies the whole block, not your selection. And changing any control regenerates the text and discards hand edits. If you plan to edit, copy first.

Common mistakes we see in mockups

Turning off the “start with Lorem ipsum” toggle is fine for a client-facing mockup, but it removes your best search signal. The canonical opening line, scrambled from Cicero's *De finibus* (Wikipedia), is unusual enough that a single grep finds every leftover instance — which is exactly the property you want from placeholder text.

Second mistake: reading the copy aloud in a design review. Filler that reads like prose invites line edits; filler that reads like filler keeps attention on spacing, hierarchy, and contrast. If reviewers keep rewriting your Latin, the problem is the review, not the generator.

Third: trusting Lorem Ipsum for localization and accessibility checks. Screen readers announce it as meaningless Latin, so it tells you nothing about reading order or heading announcements. And translated strings often run longer than English, so a layout that has only ever seen lorem looks fine until real German or Finnish arrives. Use filler to test geometry, and real strings to test everything else.

How do you keep Lorem Ipsum out of production?

Treat it like any other debug artifact: make it findable, and make shipping it fail loudly. A one-line check in CI or a pre-commit hook — `grep -ri "lorem ipsum" src/` — catches template bodies that were pasted in and half-edited, because the opening sentence usually survives even when the middle is rewritten.

For strings that are not body copy — button labels, error messages, empty states, push notifications — lorem is the wrong tool. Write real text of roughly the right length instead, so truncation and wrapping are tested against words a human will actually see. Finally, verify the numbers you care about.
