How it works
The division is the whole idea
An improper fraction has a numerator at least as large as its denominator. Dividing tells you how many whole groups fit, and the remainder becomes the new numerator.
Enter the fraction
Use the numerator and denominator for an improper fraction, or switch to Mixed → Improper and add the whole number.
Read the division
The quotient is the whole part. The remainder goes above the same denominator, so 7 ÷ 4 gives 1 remainder 3 and 1 3/4.
Check the simplified form
With simplification on, both the mixed fraction and the improper fraction are reduced using their greatest common divisor.

Go from 7/4 to 1 3/4, or from 1 3/4 back to 7/4 without reaching for another page.
Negative values handled
The sign is carried through the whole result, and a negative denominator is normalized so the answer stays clear.

FAQ
Fraction questions, answered
What is a mixed number?
A mixed number combines a whole number and a proper fraction, such as 2 1/3. It represents the same amount as the improper fraction 7/3.
Why does the remainder become the numerator?
The quotient counts complete groups of the denominator. The pieces left over are still measured in the same denominator, so the remainder sits above it. For 7/4, one whole is 4/4 and 3/4 remains.
How is the fraction simplified?
The calculator finds the greatest common divisor of the numerator and denominator, then divides both by it. For example, 10/8 becomes 5/4, and the mixed form becomes 1 1/4.
Can I enter negative fractions?
Yes. Enter the negative sign with the numerator or the whole number. For example, −7/4 becomes −1 3/4, and −1 3/4 converts back to −7/4.
