How it works
The browser reads the clip's duration, resolution and audio track โ nothing is sent anywhere.
Your target in MB is converted into a video bitrate: target bytes ร 8 รท seconds, minus audio, with 6% headroom.
Frames are scaled on a canvas and captured with MediaRecorder, then offered as a download with a size report.
Why it stays under the limit
Size = bitrate ร duration, so the tool solves the equation for the bitrate instead of guessing a quality slider.
Dropping to 720p or 480p lets each frame spend more bits, so a long clip stays watchable at 10 MB instead of turning to mush.
If the finished file misses the target, one click re-runs it using the measured overshoot โ no re-uploading, no waiting on a queue.
FAQ
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. Decoding, scaling and encoding all run in your browser tab, so the file never leaves your device โ you can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads.
Why does 1 MB mean 1,000,000 bytes here?
Upload limits on email, forms and most portals are decimal, so the tool treats 10 MB as 10,000,000 bytes and defaults to a 9.5 MB target. If your host counts binary megabytes (10,485,760 bytes), aim for 9.5 MB and you are safely inside either definition.
How long does compressing take?
About as long as the video itself, because MediaRecorder encodes in real time. A 40-second clip takes roughly 40 seconds; that is also why clips are capped at 5 minutes.
Which format do I get back?
Safari and newer Chrome/Edge builds produce MP4 (H.264). Other browsers produce WebM (VP9 or VP8), which every social platform and modern portal accepts. The download button always names the real format.
The result is over 10 MB โ now what?
Press "Compress harder": it scales the bitrate by the measured overshoot rather than a blind guess. For very long clips, also choose 480p or 360p โ resolution is the cheapest way to buy bits back.
